Police in Benue state at the weekend paraded 22 suspects arrested for various crimes across the state, including a Lance Corporal in Nigerian Army who ran from the battle field in Borno as a result of Boko Haram insurgents.
The army deserter, who identified himself as Joseph Emenike, was said to have served at 101 battalion, Niger state; he denied running away from Boko Haram insurgents in Borno state. He was said to have connived with four others to abduct a woman who was returning from church.
Corporal Emenike, however, told newsmen that he was on sick leave when a friend called him to help him retrieve an undisclosed sum of money from a debtor where he was apprehended along with two others. The other two later ran away.
Hyacinth Dagala, the state Commissioner of Police, while parading the suspects, explained that the 22 suspects were arrested across the state for various crimes; ranging from kidnapping, robbery, criminal conspiracy, unlawful possession of fire arms and culpable homicide.
Dagala further said that arms, ammunition, charms, knife, motorcycle and other items were recovered from them, adding that the suspects would soon be charged to court as soon as investigation were concluded.
He solicited for adequate cooperation from members of the public by giving useful information about strange faces or criminal hideouts to police and assured the public of police protection.
