No fewer than 30 suspects were yesterday arrested in connection with a renewed clash among student cultists in Kwara State where about 16 people were killed, the police command has said.
Nigerian Pilot learned that about 16 people were killed at the weekend, when suspected members of Aiye and Eiye Confraternity struck at the Kwara State Polytechnic.
While the remote cause of the clash could not easily be established, it was learnt that the school had since been closed down indefinitely by the management.
The state police command Public Relations Officer, Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the arrest of the suspects, adding that14 people among those detained were found culpable after screening.
Okasanmi who said investigations still continued on the development, added that the 14 suspects would be charged to court for prosecution this week.
One of the victims, it was learnt, was gunned down during the screening of aspirants for the Students Union Government’s election while another was killed at Asa Dam Road by suspected members of Eiye Confraternity.
A source who pleaded anonymity, confirmed that the killings led to renewed clashes among members of Eiye and Aiye cults, adding that it later spread to other parts of the metropolis such as Agbo-oba, Baboko, Saboline, Irewolede and Niger Roads.
“It all started when a victim who lived at Agbo-Oba was killed beside a bridge close to the filling station at Oja Tuntun area of Ilorin. Another dead body was found at a hotel in Agbooba on Sunday. One suspected cultist was murdered at Irewolede yesterday. The deceased was chased to the area and matcheted by his assailants,” he said.
