In what looked like a reprisal attack, a cult group went on rampage at Idah in the east senatorial district of Kogi State and killed 13 people.
An eyewitness, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told journalists in Idah, yesterday, that not less than 13 persons were killed by the suspected cultists.
He noted that the cultists were on rampage over the death of one of their members who was shot and killed by another rival cult group.
It was gathered from the eyewitness that the Saturday morning attack followed the killing of one Danjuma Amodu, alias Murphy who was gunned down while relaxing in front of his family house at GRA Idah.
Murphy, who was killed on Friday night, had earlier identified his assailants whom he said came on motorcycles, adding that he (Murphy) was shot from behind as he was about entering his family compound.
The eye-witness stressed that the onslaught started with the blockage of the main highway from ‘Ibro Junction’ to ‘Bishop’s Court’ road from 8am to 10am.
In the reprisal attack, gunmen in a Volkswagen Golf car invaded the ancient city of Idah and held it hostage for hours; shooting indiscriminately and in the process, many innocent people who were caught in the crossfire died, while others sustained various degree of injuries.
Not done yet, the gunmen proceeded to a drinking joint at Igala-ogba area and shot the owner, one Haruna Achema, his wife and a customer.
At Idah waterside, eight persons were reportedly shot, while another woman was killed by stray bullets.
Halidu Omaye, a mechanic at Egah Waterside, said at the last count, about 13 bodies were recorded whole, while several others were being treated for gunshot injuries; even as a source put the number of casualty at 20.
As at yesterday morning, there was uneasy calm in the town, as a police-joint military patrol team maintained surveillance.
When contacted, the Police Commissioner, Yakubu Usman, said a 27-year old man was shot dead on Anyigba-Idah road and the corpse was taken to the police station.
Usman said as the gunmen were fleeing after a gun duel, they shot three innocent persons who were rushed to the hospital.
He said his men are already on the trail of the alleged gunmen, assuring that they would soon arrested.
