Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation, Mrs Nkechi Ejele, has emphasized on the use of culture as an instrument for socio-economic development.
Mrs Ejele made the comment in Abuja recently, during the 42nd meeting of Chief Executives of Culture, CEC, of the Federation organized by the National Council for Arts and Culture, NCAC.
“it is pertinent to note that at this period, the nation is experiencing socio-economic challenges.
“There is need to focus our attention on how we can dovetail our programmes and activities towards addressing these challenges.
“Our primary concern at this time therefore should be on how to use our culture for the promotion of peace and national unity while tapping into the economic potential of our rich cultural heritage.
“It is therefore important to use the platform of Arts and Culture to effectively key into the economic diversification programme of this administration” she said.
She noted that the National Festival of Arts and Culture, NAFEST, has the potential to contribute towards the realization of the dreams of the nation’s culture and tourism sector if well managed.

“Anchoring on this, I urge my colleagues to be proactive and resourceful as well as deliberate on and initiate plans that will impact on the development of the sector and nation at large,’’ she said.
According to her, the key issues to be discussed at the meeting includes; proposed National Festival for Arts and Culture, NAFEST, 2015, a special edition of the African Arts and Crafts, AFAC, Expo 2015 among others.
