Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Col. Hameed Ali, has expressed optimism that the service under his leadership would do everything humanly possible to meet up the target of N944 billion revenue given to him by the federal government for 2015, adding that all hands must be on deck to achieve it.
The customs boss, who solicited the support and corporation of his men during his familiarisation visits to relevant government agencies in Abuja recently warned that the custom under his watch will punish any officer caught in act of corruption and adequate sanctioned will be meted out appropriately.
Col. Ali, who told journalists during the familiarisation tour on the sideline admitted that there are some challenges in the area of revenue generation said, however, that the target is not unrealisable.
“The fact is that we are behind what we are supposed to realise, but we are hopeful that this is our ember months and I believe by the time October return comes in, we will expect rise in what we have been able to gather.
“We are hopeful that November will bring some good tidings and also by December we should be able to round up to meet our target, which is N944 billion”, the Customs boss stated.
Among agencies visited included, Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS; National Copyright Commission, NCC; National Environmental Standards and Regulation Enforcement Agency, NESREA and Nigeria Prisons Service.
Addressing customs officers of the FCT command, he urged them to purge themselves of corrupt perception, promising that the issue of poor remuneration would be taken up as revenue improves.
He said, “Not all of us are corrupt but the few corrupt ones have given us a generic name. You do not make money in customs but you earn your income.
“People should know that customs is not a cash cow so purge that off your mind. If you are caught engaging in any act of corruption, such officer will be made to go through the law,” Ali said.
On remuneration, he said, “I’m not satisfied with what I discovered to be your remuneration given the present living condition , but if you chose to take the short cut by corruptly enriching yourselves, there is always a consequence for that, but like I said, we can’t improve revenue generation if this leakages persists .
“So revenue has to improve, discipline stepped up, corruption eliminated, then i can have the moral courage to face Mr. President. So give us the opportunity by abiding with all these so that i can meet him for improved welfare on your behalf,” Ali told the officers.
