IN ITS sustained efforts
to reduce the incidence
of smuggling, the Nigeria
Customs Service, NCS,
Federal Operations Unit,
FOU, Zone ‘C’ Owerri,
last February impounded
20 illicit items with a Duty
Paid Value of N172million.
The figure out-digits
that recorded in January
this year which was worth
over N122million.
Addressing journalists
in Owerri yesterday,
the Customs Area
Comptroller in charge
of the unit, Mohammed
Uba Garba disclosed that
the 20 seizures made had
underpayments recovered
to the tune of N58million,
and that 18 suspects were
arrested and 25 cases are
currently pending in court
in connection with the
Mohammed stated that his
unit impounded 9,705 pieces
of footwear worth N18m, 10
vehicles worth N46m; and
1,205 bags of 50kg bags of
imported bags of rice, worth
Also impounded were: a
1 X 40 ft container carrying
254 bales of second-hand
clothing, worth N36m; 150
pieces of second- hand
tyres, worth N960,000.00;
One container load of timber
worth N2.9m and a 1 X 20ft
container with 842 cartons
of machete worth N27m.
