GOMBE State government has inaugurated five committees for the establishment of five new institutions of higher learning in the state, as part of drive to increase residents’ access to education. Inaugurating the committees, Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Charles Iliya, said the new tertiary institutions would increase access to tertiary education, provide science and technical education, produce agricultural extension workers among others. Dankwambo recalled that at the inception of his administration, a high-powered committee on education was appointed to produce a blueprint that would facilitate development of education in the state.
“It is therefore gratifying to note that we have implemented recommendations of the committee which resulted in the improvement of basic education, remodelling and expansion of secondary schools among others,” he said. He added that the new institutions, if established, would train the teeming youth in the state towards becoming functional citizens. The governor said the appointees were selected on bases of their track records in various fields of endeavour, urging them to bring their experiences to bear in accomplishing this responsibility. The soon to be established tertiary institutions are Gombe State University of Science and Technology, State College of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, State College of Accounting and Management Studies, State Institute of Journalism and State Institute of Sports. Chairmen of respective committees include Prof Abdullahi Mahadi, Prof Yahaya Shehu, Prof Garba Bello Bala, Prof Abubakar Muazu and Prof Nebath Tanglang. Responding on behalf of the members, Prof Yahaya Shehu thanked the government for finding them worthy for the assignment, with a promise to give their best tin discharging their responsibility. The committees were given two weeks within which to submit their reports, with terms of reference to include determining the desirability or otherwise of establishing the various institutions, propose possible locations as well as define philosophy and design concepts for the institutions.
