Late Deacon Gamaliel Onosode was a disciplined Nigerian, a civil servant, a corporate administrator, the former Pro-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, the former Chairman of Zain Nigeria, one of the leading telecommunications company, now known as Airtel.

He was a presidential aspirant on the platform of the All Nigeria People’s Party of Nigeria (ANPP). He also served as the presidential adviser to President Shehu on Budget Affairs.

Gamaliel was born on 22 May, 1933 at Sapele in present day Delta State, Nigeria to the family Mr. and Mrs. Onosode. He attended Government College, Ughelli before proceeding to the prestigious University of Ibadan.

In 1990, Obafemi Awolowo University honored him with an honorary degree in recognition of his contribution to humanity. Other schools that conferred similar honour on him include University of Benin, Rivers State University of Science and Technology, University of Lagos as well as Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary, Ogbomosho.

Gamaliel started his career with the then NAL Merchant Bank of Nigeria, after years of hard work and diligence, he rose to the position of chief executive.

He was a Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, where he was elected to membership of its Board of Fellows in 1998.

Between 1979 and1982, he was a Fellow of the Economic Development Institute of the World Bank, he also was a President of Nigerian Institute of Management.

Apart from being an active civil servant, Gamaliel was indeed a boardroom guru. From 1984 to 2007, he was on the board of Directors of the Dunlop Nigeria Plc where he was the chairman, he was also the former chairman of Cadbury Nigeria Plc. He was also a known figure in the public sector as he was also a member of the Presidential Commission on Parastatals and Nigeria LNG Working Committee and Nigeria LNG Limited.

Gamaliel was also known as a keen and devoted Christian, he motivated to start the Good News Baptist Church in Feb. 1984, in his sitting room and today, the humble start of the Good News Baptist Church has been blessed by God with a large member of over 2000 people and is a major faction of the Nigerian Baptist Convention.

Deacon Gamaliel was married to Susan Onosode, his supportive christain wife who was by his side as he founded the (GAMSU), Foundation coined from the first letters of his name and that of his wife. GAMSU is anot-for-profit and non-political organization established to foster the success of children through innovative, flexible learning opportunities while providing learners the enabling environment to learn.

Gamaliel Onosode battled succumbed to the cold arm of death on 29 September 2015 at the age of 82 after long battle with bone cancer.
