Residents of Benin City, the Edo State capital, were shocked when they saw the decomposing body of a new born baby, who was wrapped and dumped in a drainage along Akala street behind the oba’s palace walls.
The residents raised alarm, following an offensive odour that pervaded the air which prompted concerned citizens to carry out a search that led to the discovery of the dead infant
wrapped in a polythene bag.
Our correspondent, who was at the scene of the incident yesterday, met some residents discussing the heinous act, while others called on the local council authorities to as a matter of urgency remove the corpse to prevent an outbreak of epidemic
A resident of the area, Mr. Tosan Omoregie, said the dumping of a new born baby is a crime against God and humanity, just as he appealed to young girls to avoid illicit sexual acts that could led to unwanted pregnancy.
“It is despicable for anybody to have done this. The mouth of the baby was tied apparently to prevent people in the neighbourhood from hearing his cry. We are appealing to the government to remove the body.’’
