Okpealama Community in Warri South-West LGA in Delta State, yesterday staged a peaceful protest against the destruction of their fishing nets by a contractor to Shell Petroleum Development Company Nigeria Ltd, and demanded for compensation from SPDC.
Chairman of the community, Mr. Sunday Moses, who led the peaceful protest to SPDC Beach at Madangho, said the people have been seriously affected.
However, the Drilling Supervisor of the Shell Flow Station at Ogidigben and the Beach Master, SPDC Madangho, who spoke to the protesting villagers, assured them that their message will be communicated to SPDC who will compel its contractors to pay damages.
Moses said for over 2 weeks now, since we made official complain we have not heard from SPDC despite promises of its representatives to look into the matter although one of the contractors called to show concern.
He said he can no longer guarantee peace from the villagers who are boiling with resentment at the predicament which SPDC contractors have plunged them.
He said he has been keeping the aggrieved villagers under control from violence which may be misinterpreted by detractors as protest over the Export Protesting Zone (EPZ) project of which Okpeleama is a stakeholder as noted in the EPZ map.
