Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Delta State council has conferred an award of recognition on the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Monday Igbuya.
Rt. Hon. Monday Igbuya while receiving the award of recognition in Asaba urged journalists to put politicians on their toes by investigating information that would unearth their activities before publishing.
Igbuya frowned at the pulling down syndrome of Journalists who publish purported stories on the social media, saying that it is most unfortunate that they run government down.
According to Speaker, “I am open to criticism, if you have any information about me, come to me for my comment to enable you balance your report, not just rushing to the press.”
The Speaker however, tasked Journalists to avoid publishing misleading stories by making allegations that are unfounded, just as he advised the union to produce some form of guidelines that would guide practicing Journalists in the state.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Delta state council, Comrade Norbert Chiazor had told the Speaker that award would spur him to greater work.
Chiazor disclosed that the award was in recognition of his good work, commitment to duty as well as peaceful co-existence between the Speaker, members and the executive arm of government.
According to him, NUJ has full confidence in Mr. Speaker, we salute you for your education, commitment and peace as NUJ award is not for sale but was based on conviction.
