All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ondo State has warned the state governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, not to procure any loan in the state for the conduct of local government election in the state.
In a statement signed by the state director of Media and Publicity, Steve Otaloro, and made available to newsmen in Akure the state capital, the party described the new move by the governor to procure another loan as worrisome and totally unacceptable for an administration that met over N38 billion in the state treasury when it took over government in 2009 to conduct a local government election after more than seven years in the saddle.
The party recalled that the Mimiko administration in 2011 announced that it would create new local government areas in Ondo State in addition to his promise to conduct elections into all the 18 already existing local government councils, and even sets up a local government creation committee which expended about N600 million tax payers’ money.
According to the statement, the action of the governor now that the economic situation both at the state and federal levels is at a sorry state is of great concern to the party.
“It’s common knowledge that when loans are procured on behalf of a state or nation, such loans would be tied to capital projects and development that would make direct impact and impression on the people so governed.
“If once again, as it has been in the last 6 years, loans are being procured on behalf of Ondo State citizens without due process or recourse to the people, neither a justification of past loans so procured through visible improvements in the life of the governed, it then becomes a great source of concern and worry to us in the APC, that such huge financial liabilities would be left for the citizens and future governments to bear.”
In his reaction to the APC statement, the state Commissioner for Information, Mr Kayode Akimade berated the comment of the party, saying that the party was naïve about good governance.
According to him, it is not a crime for government to obtain loan to execute developmental projects that are beneficial to the people of the state.
The commissioner said that taking loan was not only peculiar to Ondo State, as he queried the party on its silence on the case of Lagos and Edo States which he said were top on the list of states that are on loan, and both controlled by the APC.
