Following the reports by the some Policemen in Ebonyi State and the subsequent arrest of some members of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, during the peaceful protest yesterday, the organised Labour has called on the Nigerian Police Force to grant unconditional release to their members arrested and detained to avoid an unnecessary escalation of the isuue.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the NLC, Secretary General Dr. Peter Ozo-Esonand made available to Nigerian Pilot in Abuja.
“We urge overzealous police personnel who arrested and detained some of our members in Ebonyi State to unconditionally release them immediately.
“We would use this opportunity to sound a note of warning to all overzealous security personnel.
“This has been a peaceful protest and we intend to keep it so. They should do nothing reckless to escalate it. The statement reads
Nigerian Pilot learnt a team of Policemen assaulted the members of the Organised Labour yesterday in Ebonyi state, as well as arresting some of the leaders including the State NLC Chairman, Comr Ikechukwu Nwafor while embarking on the peaceful protest in the state.
According to an eye witness, men of the Nigerian Police Force attacked, beat up and arrested members of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, during a peaceful protest against the increase in pump price of petroleum product along the Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway, Ebonyi State.
He also commended his fellow comrades for keeping the faith in the struggle and urged them not to relent in the path of honour as victory is guaranteed.
“We find it appropriate once again to commend our affiliates, members and Civil Society allies for keeping faith in this struggle.
“Day two which started at Berger Round about this morning recorded improved success. There is no doubt, this is due to your unqualified commitment.
“On our part, we not only re-affirm our faith in this struggle, we shall not allow any distraction to take us off this path of honour.
“Finally, we would want to inform all that this protest continues tomorrow. The take-off point is Berger Round About. Please be there at 7a.m.
