RETIREES under the auspices of Concern Local Government Pensioners in Nasarawa state have advised the state governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura against diverting bailout fund for the proposed airport project as the gesture by the federal government was not meant for such project.
The group averred that the proposed project of the state government was unpopular, needless and a misplaced priority as the planned diversion of N4billion out of the N18.3billion bailout to the state undermines the purpose for which the fund was meant for.
This was contained in an open letter addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari which was jointly signed by Abubakar Atashi Ola, Mary Isa and 48 other members of the group and made available to newsmen in Lafia yesterday.
They insisted that the idea of bailout fund was a palliative measure by the Federal Government to enable states settle backlog of salary arrears and other entitlements owed workers and retirees, noting that the state government cannot divert the fund for what they described as unpopular project which at the end will not be of any benefit to the people of the state.
The group appealed to the President to as a matter of urgency, come to their aid by drawing the attention of the state government to channel the bailout fund to appropriate beneficiaries so as to save them from the agony they were currently passing through.
“Situation where most pensioners of local government cannot send their children to school, cannot afford a square meal in a day while others are lying critically ill without medication among others; building of Airport at this critical time is not a priority”
“Never in the history of the state has Local Government Pensioners ever been treated with kit glove as presently experienced in the state. A lot of pensioners have been sent to their early grave while the living among them live miserably” The group lamented.
