Marine operators in Port Harcourt and its environs have decried what they described as double taxation by those who claimed to be in charge of marine activities in Rivers State.
It would be recalled that, recently the Port Harcourt Area Manager of NIWA, National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, Alhaji Abdullahi Daai, issued a warning to the Rivers State Ministry of Environment and other illegal bodies to desist from collection of fees from Marine operators, as NIWA remains the only statutory agency vested with such collection within the state’s waterways.
Speaking on the development, a Chief Executive of an indigenous dredging company in Port Harcourt, Chief Sotonye Tubo –Tobin, condemned the trend, saying that those who engaged in the unwholesome act connived to swindle innocent people by raising one illegal levy or the other, thereby making things difficult for the operators of marine business in the state.
Chief Tubo-Tobin lamented that the trend if not checked could lead to fold-up of some outfits on the sector, and called for government intervention.
