Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung and the Plateau State governor, Simon Lalong have once again engaged in personality clash in Shendam Local Government Area of the state at a cultural festival of the Gamai ethnic group during the Christmas break.
The latest clash, second in the series, has brought to the fore the frosty relationship between the two political office holders from Plateau State.
Our correspondent gathered that both the minister and the governor have had this mutual suspicion of each other’s moves ahead of 2019 governorship race in the state and this has given rise to a kind of cold war between them.
According to a close source, have stormed the Shendam mini stadium to attend a cultural event when the governor was already seated and the event was about to close.
The arrival of the minister was said to have caused a disruption of the event due to the long convoy of loyalists that were on his entourage.
Gov Lalong, who became obviously embarrassed by the protocol breach by the minister, was said to have remained calm but his security aides made moves to protect him.
The situation led to a clash between loyalists of the governor and the minister but for the prompt intervention of policemen on duty, the clash would have degenerated into something nasty.
Governor Lalong’s followers demanded that the minister should not be allowed a seat, alleging that he was not invited to the festival.
The minister was later offered a seat at a location far from Gov Lalong but he insisted on sitting next to the governor.
In spite of the uneasy calm maintained by Lalong, his supporters were miffed and obviously agitated as they were unhappy that the development denigrated the office of the governor.
There has been no love lost between Lalong and Dalung since the appointment of the minister. It was alleged that the governor opposed the nomination of Dalung as minister on the bases that both of them come from the same political zone in the state.
Gov Lalong has therefore been avoiding meeting the minister at any forum, which explained why the minister was not given any formal invitation to the function.
