Acting on a petition by Akwa-Ibom State Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Mr. Austin Okojie, operatives of Department of State Security, DSS, are said to have arrested a security staff of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, over threat to the REC’s life.
Okojie, who raised the alarm yesterday during an emergency meeting with the staff of the Commission in his office in Uyo, the Akwa-Ibom State capital, said the threats were usually made through anonymous phone calls and text messages at nights.
The REC explained that the said security staff promised to exterminate his life if he fails to comply with the order to pay him an undisclosed amount within the week.
He said that the threats have now made him to be living in fear of the unknown as he has remained in discomfort and danger of his life and members of his family, hence the emergency to alert the other staff of the danger his life has been subjected.
“My life is now in serious danger; so also the lives of members of my family because of these threats. I can no longer move freely as any other loyal citizen of this country. I now live in utter fear of the unknown,” Okojie lamented.
Okojie solicited the cooperation of the security agencies in the state to investigate the character behind the threats for possible prosecution, adding that if such dangerous elements were allowed to walk the streets of the state freely, many innocent lives would be rendered uncomfortable and endangered.
Some of the text messages sent to the REC read: “Oga Okojie, it’s a fool like you that says in your heart and being, there is no God, because you are corrupt and have done abominable works in you doeth no good (Pslam 14: 1). U must reward all the staff of INEC, AKS based on the money sent to them by the State Governor. You want to embezzle it for the sake of buy ‘n your cocaine. I am going to open your dirty can of worms to all the anti-graft agencies.
“Bet me, soon you will go in for it. For the Holy Bible says, whatever a man soweth that is what he shall reap. You sow to corruption and greed, your reward is death. Idiot, imbecile, Ino, barawo, ikong ekpo. God will punish you 100 times including all your households and the incoming and the unborn generations, except you share that money to all the staff”.
It was however gathered that the alleged messages and call threatening the life of the REC were tracked by the mobile phone operators and the name of the staff identified as Mr. Asuqua David.
But efforts made to confirm the arrest by the DSS was not successful as at the time of filing this report.
