After spending six days in detention by the Department of State Service, DSS, former Chief Security Officer, CSO to immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan, Mr. Gordon Obua, has regained his freedom.
Obua’s release came a few hours after he dispelled rumours of his death, when he told a press conference at the Yellow House headquarters of the secret police that he was not dead.
Nigeria Pilot learnt yesterday that Obua was freed late Tuesday night after a comprehensive de-briefing by DSS.
DSS sources disclosed that Obua was released at about 10pm on Tuesday.
Obua, an operative of the DSS, was arrested and detained on July 16. There were immediate speculations that he had passed on in detention, and his lawyer also raised the alarm that he was denied access to his doctor, lawyer and family members. It was also alleged that Obua was denied access to his medications for hypertension and diabetes.
But when he was presented before newsmen at the DSS’ conference room, Obua expressed surprise over the rumour.
His words: “Gentlemen of the press, let me use this opportunity to thank all Nigerians, members of my family, and concerned citizens who have expressed very serious concerns for the past six days, because of the prevailing situation between me and my office.
“This morning (Tuesday) my attention was drawn to a report that I have died in detention. This has caused serious anxiety within the populace. I want to use this medium to tell Nigerians, members of my family and all concerned citizens that I am healthy.
“I am a member of staff of the Department of State Services, DSS, and having completed my tour of duties as Chief Security Officer, CSO, to the last President, the Service feels that I should give account of my tenure.
“So far, there is no adverse situation and I am optimistic that Nigerians will be informed about the outcome of this exercise. Once again, I thank you immensely and I want to use this opportunity to thank the Director-General of DSS, Mr. Mohammed Lawan Daura, for the way he has treated me from the time I came in to this period.
“Nigerians should be assured that the Department of State Services is a very responsible organisation, and I believe that nothing adverse will be done to my person if I have not done anything wrong,” he had said.
