Pandemonium pervaded Kaduna yesterday as operatives of the Department of State Service, DSS, reportedly killed a travelling woman along Kaduna- Abuja Expressway.
The incident was said to have happened around 2:15 pm yesterday in Jere along Kaduna – Abuja highway when the DSS operatives attempted to shoot another vehicle and in the process shot at the woman in another vehicle.
The woman alongside her five children was said to be inside a boarded commercial vehicle on their way from Abuja down to Kaduna when she was hit by the DSS bullet.
Eyewitness accounts however gathered that the woman’s corpse was moved from Jere to toll gate near Kakau/ Sabon Gayan community where the children, other passengers and passerby staged a protest and barricaded the road; leading to a terrible jam shutting down the road completely.
Road users and travellers were said to have been stranded for hours as no movement either ways of entering and going out of Kaduna.
According to the eyewitness, one Sufiyanu who spoke to our correspondent through phone, “We actually don’t know what really happened, but we only saw the DSS operatives about 6 of them arriving in two Hilux vehicles. Immediately they saw a vehicle coming they tried to stop the driver, but he refuses to stop so they shot at the vehicle. Unfortunately they missed their targets and hit at the commercial vehicle conveying the victim (the woman) and her five children. She died on the spot. This angered motorists that witnessed the incidence as they blocked the high way.
“It took the intervention of police commissioner to plead with the motorists to pave way for other vehicles plying the highway, but the angry motorist insisted the Governor must visit the scene before they open the road.
“They hit the windscreen of any vehicle that attempted to pass,” he stated.
The State Commissioner of Police Adamu Ibrahim confirmed the incident, saying the DSS suspects have been arrested by the police and called for order and calmness.
According to him, investigation is ongoing to ascertain the situation.
However, as at the time of filing in this report, details about the identity of the DSS operatives were yet to be ascertained.
