With the present state of affairs at the Super Eagles, the team needs a psychological boost in order to conquer the Pharaohs of Egypt in this month’s 2017 Nations Cup double header qualifiers.
Mr. Ime Ukoh, a sports psychologist said in a chat with Nigerian Pilot Sports that the sudden resignation of Coach Sunday Oliseh has left the national team in dire need of a lift in their confidence.
“Oliseh is gone and in comes Siasia. Egypt are dictating the pace in our group and are the team to beat. The national team must stay confident, concentrate for the task ahead devoid of anxiety.
“The team’s psychologist knows what to do. There must be a merger of players’ physical and mental capabilities as they go for another shot at the Nations Cup ticket.”
Ukoh who holds a Master degree on sports Psychology from the University of Port Harcourt posited that it is unfortunate that most Nigerian coaches and players do not know the importance of sports pyschology in achieving success.
“Players and coaches need more than their natural skills to enable them cope well in times of adversity, pressure and anxiety. Sports psychology helps athletes develop their mental skills and keep their concentration in top gear. There are a lot of distractions in the Super Eagles and team’s psychologist should know how to fix it.”
At the thick of relegation battle in the Nigerian Professional Football League last season, Ime Ukoh was drafted to Akwa United FC.
He did not only help steer the Uyo-based side out of relegation, his expertise came in handy as the team clinched the Federation Cup for the first time since its inception in 1997.
