Minority Whip, Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Anthony Nwegede, has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Nwegede, who was elected on the platform of the Labour Party, LP, announced his defection on the floor of the House during plenary on Tuesday, saying his former party has been in crisis and it has become intractable.
He said having seen that the crisis cannot be resolved, it was imperative for him to join the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the state which he described as peaceful and accommodative.
Nwegede maintained that the PDP in the state is very strong, united and has a bright future.
He explained that he had earlier registered in his ward before making the open declaration.
Speaking on the defection, Speaker Francis Nwifuru said Nwegede’s decision was in line with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He described PDP as a generous and accommodative party which welcomes everybody into its fold.
Nwifuru said following the defection, the office of the minority leader has ceased to exist.
The House also approved Governor David Umahi’s request to borrow N800 million to be used as counterpart fund for rural water projects to be executed under Sustainable Development Goals by the federal and state government.
