Six departments may be facing imminent closure by the National Commission for Colleges of Education, NCCE, following the sack of 83 Lecturers from Ebonyi state college of Education located in Ikwo Local Government Area over alleged irregularities in their appointments.
The 83 lecturers were fortnight ago disengaged following the directive of the State Governor while receiving reports of the college governing Council he mandated to investigate petitions against the management of the college.
Governor Umahi had stated that the sack must be done before the government reviews the report submitted by the Council or visits the institution as was also recommended.
According to the governor, “It is normal to recruit staff to achieve institutions’ accreditation objectives but the fact remains that they are not permanent staff.
Meanwhile, some students of the college have cried out to Gov Umahi to reconsider to avoid the imminent shutdown of the 6 departments by NCCE.
The Students expressed concern over the sack of 83 lecturers of the institution by the State Governor.
Some of the students who spoke to Nigerian Pilot in Abakaliki lamented that with the sack of the 83 lecturers employed between 2011 till date, more than 6 departments in the institution risk being shutdown by NCCE.
A final year student in the department of Primary Education, Miss Ifeoma Obinwa who wept profusely regretted that with the sack, the department is now left with 5 lecturers while the minimum requirement for the department to exist in the institution is 8 lecturers.
Miss Obinwa who expressed shock over the sack of the lecturers noted that with only 5 lecturers remaining in the department, NCCE is bound by law to shutdown the department.
According to her; “the Governor’s directive which led to the sack of the lecturers does not just affect the lecturers alone, the students and parents who have their wards in the affected departments are the most hit because when the department are shutdown, we have no other option than to either start looking for admission in other tertiary institution as year one students or become school dropouts”.
“That’s not all, the money our parents have spent from our first year to our final year would now be fruitless venture. How many of them would survive the shock of getting to hear that your child who is in her final year turns out to drop out of school for no fault of hers?
“Even if the department meets up with the required 8 lecturers, the School’s Primary School which is a prerequisite to establishing the Primary Education department is now left with only 1 teacher which automatically would be shutdown by NCCE”.
She regretted that currently, she is almost through with her project and teaching practice, adding that some of the sacked lecturers were the ones supervising them and having been sacked, may decide to go with the students result which is also detrimental to their graduation aside shutting down the departments.
Another final year student in the department of Mathematics, Master Chukwubuike Igwe appealed to the State Governor, Chief David Umahi to consider the plights of the student, their parents and benefactors who have spent huge resources in training them up to the final year and reconsider his decision.
“We believe our Governor is a listening father who is upbeat in seeing to the success of all students in the different institutions in the state and we are optimistic that he would not wish that hundreds of student especially indigenes of Ebonyi state would drop out of school”.
“In mathematics department, after the sack we are left with just 5 lecturers while the prerequisite is at least 12 lecturers. There is no doubt that the regulating commission, NCCE would soon clamp down on the institution”.
He noted that all their life dream of graduating before the end of the year would now be a mirage if nothing was done to reverse the decision.
