Ebonyi State governor, Chief David Umahi Wednesday tasked President Muhammadu Buhari to sustain the tenets of democracy to justify the confidence reposed on him by the people.
Governor Umahi gave the charge when Save Democracy Group Africa, SDGA, paid him a courtesy call at the EXCO chambers, Government House, Abakaliki, where he said the plan by the group to confer President Buhari the Grand Patron of the group and life time democracy award was an honour no other person than him deserved at present.
Governor Umahi who was represented by his deputy, Dr Kelechi Igwe said democracy in the country had come of age and should be sustained saying “military has no justification to tamper with the existing democracy”.
He described democracy as beauty of life, which he said was why Buhari after being a military president aspired to be civilian president which he eventually actualized in 2015.
Umahi commended the Save Democracy Group for pushing for the sustenance of democracy in Africa and promised to partner with the group.
Earlier, leader of the group and former Speaker of the House of Representative Hon Ghali N’Abba said the organization was formed to unite the political class and other stakeholders and to build a platform that promotes an enduring democracy.
Represented by the chairman budget planning and fund raising, Mrs. Rachael Akpabio, the group said about 3,000 participants were expected to participate in the forthcoming Annual National Political Summit, which will take place in Abuja; adding that Governor Umahi has been chosen by the group to be a chief discussant representing the South East in the summit. She said President Buhari will be honored during the summit for his faith and respect for democracy in the country.
