Speaker House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara yesterday lamented the state of Nigeria economy saying the economy is in a state of unmitigated disaster and needs to be addressed before it ends in calamity.
He stated this while speaking with newsmen in Jos.
Dogara said since the government is not resting on its oars to rescue the economy from its abysmal level, Nigerians too must make sacrifices to rejuvenate the economy, adding that all hands must be on deck to do something about the economy.
On the alleged jumbo pay for the legislature, the speaker said most of the figures being branded about as the salaries of National Assembly members were far from reality adding that the lawmakers do not fix their salaries, but Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission, RMFC.
In his words, “We don’t fix our salaries; this is the work of RMFC. People should take the benefit of Freedom of Information Act to seek for information on that from the agency; I do know that our salary is not in the region of N1 million per month.
“There are discussion going on relating to allowances being paid to members, this is a matter under our watch, we intend to bring this to front burner of national discourse. We have started it, as soon as we take root in the House of Representatives, position will be taken on this.
“This will be done by competent CSO in conjunctions with development partner that we are discussing with that would help us conduct the needed assessment. By the time that the need assessment would be out, every Nigerian will know the true state of things,” he said.
The speaker, who expressed confidence that the House of Representatives under his leadership would experience peace and stability said stability of an Assembly is anchor on fairness and justice, involving equal treatment for all irrespective of their background.
“Stability is anchor on fairness and justice, when we aggregate all the interest of members and treat them with fairness, there won’t be much problem, we would be just in sharing committee positions and other positions in the House. We would operate as one big family, this is the tradition that we want to maintain,” he further stressed.
