As the race to the Edo State government house gathers steam and all the gladiators prepare for the primaries to slug it out for who eventually gets the party tickets, there appears to be a growing grassroots support for Professor Frederick Ebegue Amadasun.
Investigations by Nigerian Pilot reveal that despite the evident tension between party supporters, Professor Amadasun who is one of the governorship aspirants on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, appears to be enjoying growing support across party lines.
A professor of Anaesthesiology, consultant anesthesiologist at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, and chairman of the Edo State Hospital Management Board, Professor Amadasun’s support has continued to grow in recent weeks, taking many political analysts and other contenders by surprise.
According to close sources, the practising professor of Medicine was drawn into the race by friends, associates, the people of Orhionmwon Local Government Area, and the Edo South senatorial district.
A cross section of respondents who spoke to Nigerian Pilot said he was one of the most likely candidates to take over from Governor Adams Oshiomhole.
“If you go to the social media, you will see that the support for this technocrat is building fast. Youths, market women, farmers, the ordinary people, political stakeholders, traditional rulers, have all been rallying support for Professor Amadasun.
“Looking at his track record beginning from his days as president of the Students’ Union, University of Benin; elected councilor of Ugboko Ward 8, in Orhionmwon L.G.A; his positions within the academic environment and the teaching hospital as head of Department, HOD, registrar, chief resident, multiple time member of the Hospital management board in Edo State, and currently as chairman of the Hospital Management Board, a position he has been holding since August 2014 till date, he has displayed a highly commendable level of trustworthiness, accountability, selfless service, commitment to duty, indefatigability, incorruptibility, firmness and great leadership quality while remaining a grassroots person, it is clear we have in him, what it takes to build on the gains and achievements of the Governor Oshiomhole administration,” a youth leader from Oriomwon Local Government Area, Vincent Dumnoi told Nigerian Pilot.
Professor Amadasun will, however, get past political bigwigs like Deputy Governor Pius Odubu; former chief of staff and commissioner for works, Osarodion Ogie; former minister of state for works, Chris Ogienmwonyi; retired army officer and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, gubernatorial candidate in 2012, Charles Airhiavbere, amongst others who are all vying for the APC ticket at the forthcoming primaries.
