CHAIRMAN, Board of Trustees, BoT, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Sen. Walid Jibrin has averred that the party’s candidate for the forthcoming governorship election in Edo state was only awaiting to be sworn in as next governor of the state.
The BoT chairman made the declaration at the weekend in his country home in Marmara, Nasarawa local government area of Nasarawa state while addressing executive members of the party from Nasarawa West senatorial district of that paid him a solidarity visit.
Jibrin stressed that with enthusiasm and support being shown by electorates to the PDP in Edo state irrespective of party affiliation, there was no dount that the election was a work over for the PDP, just as he revealed that necessary arrangement had been put in place to that effect.
On the forthcoming national convention of the party, the party chietfain declared that the era of impunity, godfatherism and imposition of candidates against the wishes of the majority of people for elections by the party was gone.
He said that the party will provide a level playing ground to all candidates aspiring for positions in the party’s forthcoming national convention in order to ensure a free and fair election scheduled to hold in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital.
He maintained that the PDP has no anointed candidates for the convention and that no aspirant will be forced to step down for another except on understanding between the aspirants themselves.
“We are not going to force any aspirant to step down for another except the aspirant themselves decides to do so voluntarily. Let me assure you that the era of impunity, godfatherism and imposition of candidates in PDP is over.
“Though the position of chairmanship of the party has been zoned to South-South, we as a party have no anointed candidate in the zone. Every qualify member of the party is free to contest”.
“Despite some setbacks and challenges facing our party, the party remains most popular and acceptable by the people. What is happening is just democracy in action but the BoT and other stakeholders of the party are working tirelessly to overcome the challenges.
“W are embarking on courtesy visits to some of the founder fathers of PDP in order to chat a way forward for the growth and development of the party” He revealed.
Earlier Mr. Samuel Osu, the PDP chairman of Nasarawa Western senatorial district who led over 70 party executives from the five local government and their wards executive members said that the visit was aimed at identifying with the BoT chairman for his recent elevation.
He noted that the entire party executives and members were proud of the BoT chairman, saying he (Jibrin) was a good ambassador of the PDP in the zone, state and the country in general through selfless service to the party and Nigeria as a whole.
