WIFE of the Niger State governor, Dr. Amina Abubakar Bello who is the founder of RAiSE Foundation, has stated that with increased education and sensitisation, Vesico Vaginal Fistula, VVF, could be eliminated in Nigeria. Mrs Abubakar, who made this known in Bida where she opened a VVF camp to conduct surgeries for 30 women with the condition, said when people were aware of the causes of VVF, it could go a long way towards eliminating it from the society. She stated that prolonged labour was one of the main causes of VVF. “Prolonged labour is the major cause of VVF and instead of going to the primary health care centres close to them, they try to deliver at home, which leads to complications. Eventually, when they are taken to the hospital, they might have lost the child and then develop the condition.” Abubakar also stated that her foundation had commenced plans to set up a fistula centre that would serve the North-Central as there is none in the zone and the North-East. She enjoined Nigerians to join in the fight against VVF, saying that it was everybody’s business to join in the sensitisation and education of people on the need to access primary health care centres.
