Since Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State’s running battle with the 19 All Progressives Congress, APC lawmakers has crippled some major activities of the state in recent times, the National Working Committee, NWC of the party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has thrown its support for the governor in its efforts to put to rest the impeachment plot by the lawmakers.
The PDP, having gone through all the processes from the court and being the major opposition party now in the country, has called on Nigerian new President, Muhammadu Buhari to call to order the 19 APC lawmakers who are due to finally bow out as lawmakers in the state this week to stop the impeachment plot in the interest of democracy and the rule of law as being canvassed by President Buhari.
The Acting Chairman of the PDP, Chief Uche Secondus and his team, who were in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital on a solidarity visit to the new government of the All Progressives Congress, APC at federal level must ensure the party obeys the rule of law and due process must be followed in their gang-up to impeach Governor Fayose, saying it is a litmus test to the new administration if it would obey the rule of law.
The delegation to Ekiti State included the National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo, National Publicity Secretary, Mr Olisa Metuh, National Organising Secretary, Alhaji Abubakar Mustapha, National Auditor, Mr Fatai Adeyanju.
According to Secondus, “We are here in Ekiti to pay solidarity visit to our dear Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose over the political crisis in Ekiti State. As you are aware, the leadership of APC and the lawmakers had decided to gang up to illegally remove the governor from office.
“The court order of April 23 given by Justice Chukwu of the Federal High Court in Abuja is still effective. As of now, Hon Adewale Omirin is not the authentic speaker of the Assembly and can’t communicate to the Chief Judge of the State to set up panel to try Fayose. Even as we speak, the governor has not received any letter from the lawmakers.
“We call on the Federal Government, the Ekiti people that democracy is in danger in Ekiti. We owe it a duty to protect the rule of law. Should they go ahead to illegally impeach the governor, the consequences will be anarchy, crisis and violence.
“The PDP as a party is law abiding and this we demonstrated by allowing democracy to grow while in control. This is a test case for the APC federal government. It must ensure that constitution is protected.
“We are not begging anybody, but our appeal has been that the due process must be followed. We are warning the lawmakers to desist from their actions.
“PDP as a party will not allow anybody to return Nigeria to autocracy. Fayose is a performer and he should be allowed to develop this State.”
The Governor of the state, Ayo Fayose, in his speech promised a virile opposition by the PDP and to defend the country’s democracy from being a one party democracy.
“We will not allow them to trample on the constitution. That the country is witnessing peace today is a collaborative effort between former President Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP. The PDP is united after the loss at the election.
“But we are assuring you that we are solidly on ground. You know it will get to a stage when the people will act like the constitution themselves. When the APC lawmakers wanted to do “jankara” impeachment, the people here become constitution themselves and they said no.
“Ekiti is a PDP controlled State and this must be respected. Nigeria can’t be a one party State because Nigeria is a federating State. Former Governor Kayode Fayemi was a governor here and Jonathan never gave him problem, so nobody can give me problem.
What Ekiti State need now is peace that would last and not impeachment plot that has created fear within the fabrics of the resident for a very long time? Now, that the 4th assembly would be winding down and end there tenure this week, no meaning impeachment process can take place except if the state would want to plunged itself into its former constitutional crisis whereby some good brains in the Judiciary have lost their job while they took active part in a process that did not received the blessings of the highest level of the Judiciary in the country.
Now, is the time for all to embrace a democracy that is based on the rule of law as being canvassed by Mr President?
Now, that the tenure of the current legislators, the 4th in the history of the state that is mostly populated by 19 APC lawmakers would end this week, the Ayo Fayose led government would be at rest and seat up to start on a new footing with another set of lawmakers which have all the 26 lawmakers of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP as the legislature.
The issue of the impeachment fever that has created fear in the heart of the people and slowing down the business of government will be a forgone issue.
The 5th assembly populated by 26 PDP lawmakers would put to rest all the fears, anxiety and tension already created in the heart of the people. It is expected that these sets of lawmakers who are Fayose’s loyalists would give the people the best of legislative rating and not a rubber stamp legislatures who would only be answerable to the executive and not the people for the interest of the state on which they are support to considered first before anything which include development, growth and progress of the state.
Ekiti need peace and not impeachment after suffering from untold hardship in the recent public disturbances that consumed properties worth millions of naira.
