EkweremaduFollowing the election of Chief Ike
Ekweremadu as the Deputy Senate
President last Tuesday, there are indications
that the South East may no longer produce
the new Secretary to the Government of
the Federation, SGF.
Earlier reports suggest that President
Muhammadu Buhari has penciled down
the South East to produce the SGF and
consequently directed Governor Rochas
Okorocha of Imo State to forward three
nominees.
Governor Okorocha was said to have
sent the names of the former National
Chairman of the defunct ANPP, Dr
Ogbonnaya Onu; former governor of
Anambra State, Dr Chris Ngige and his
(Okorocha) in-law, Prof Anthony Anwuka.
The Imo state governor, who is the
leader of the APC in the South East is said
to be rooting for Prof Anwuka, whose
son is married to Governor Okorocha’s
daughter.
However, the unexpected twist in the
outcome of the election of the leadership of
the Senate and House of Representatives
has sent the presidency and national
leaders of the APC back to the drawing
board to rejig the sharing of high profile
political offices.
Out of the six geopolitical zones only
the South South is missing in high-profile
offices under the new APC administration.
The North West produced President
Buhari; the South West produced the
Vice President and Deputy Speaker of
the House of Representatives; the North
Central got the Senate President, while the
North East got the Speaker of the House of
Representatives.
With the emergence of Ekweremadu
from the South East as Deputy Senate
President only the South South is missing
in the picture.
Nigerian Pilot Sunday gathered that this
development will almost assuredly knock
the entire South East out of the race for the
SGF.
According to a member of APC
National Working Committee who craved
for anonymity, “The South East was one
of the two zones where the APC got the
least number of votes during the last
general election and it is unthinkable that
the zone should still be expecting to get
the SGF after clinching the Deputy Senate
President.”
Our source further added that members
of the APC from the South South zone are
already pushing for the SGF to be given
to the zone to balance the geopolitical
equation.
However, our source said members of
APC from the oil rich South South that
are agitating for the position of the SGF
must intensify their lobby as the National
Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-
Oyegun of Edo state is also from the zone.
