Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai has begged lawmakers in the Kaduna State House of Assembly to follow his example and cut down their salaries and allowances to enable the state generate enough money to actualise the dream of changing the face lift of the state.
It would be recalled that El-Rufai had in his inaugural speech after taking oath of office as the Governor of the state said himself and his deputy, Hon. Bala Bantex have reached a conclusion to forfeit 50% of their salaries and allowances as sacrifice to improve the fiscal in the state.
El-Rufai made the appeal to the state law makers when he paid his maiden official visit to the assembly yesterday lamenting that 80 per cent of the state resources was being spent on salaries and allowances of civil servants and political office holders, while 20 per cent is left for the state’s development.
El-Rufai, therefore told the legislature that, in meeting their people’s hopeful quest, the elected officials must be at the vanguard of change and must lead by letting their conduct manifest hard work, sacrifice and humility.
“The Deputy Governor and I have signaled our intentions in this area by announcing that we are taking a pay cut of 50 per cent of our salary and allowances until the fiscal situation of the state improves. We appeal to all political office holders to embrace this example and attitude of sacrifice.
“Honourable members, we need a serious dialogue about what our spending priorities should be, and the sources of the revenues to finance the huge demand for public services that improve the quality of lives of our people.
“One casualty of the new commitment to change surely must be the perks that elected officials and political appointees have been conditioned by the previous era into assuming as legitimate entitlements. We cannot be authentic representatives of our people if the only thing that changes as a result of our being in office are our personal circumstances. We should value highly our ability to fairly reflect our society and our commitment to help realise for our people all the substantive dimensions of democracy.
Responding, the Speaker of the State house of assembly, Aminu Abdullahi Shagali assured the Governor that the hallow chamber will take a look at his pleads in order to respond accordingly.
