Ebonyi State governor, Chief Martin Elechi said he would congratulate his deputy for winning the state governorship election when he had proven his critics wrong.
Elechi stated this yesterday during a reconciliation meeting between his deputy and governor-elect, Engr. Dave Umahi at Government House, Abakaliki.
Recall that Governor Elechi reneged from supporting Umahi to succeed him following allegation that he (Umahi) would not tolerate opposition if given power, which is against Elechi’s gospel that whoever that would succeed him should be somebody that tolerates opposition.
Elechi, while addressing the governor-elect before journalists, stated that nations had gone to wars and fought wars and conquered but no nation had conquered its people.
“Since the electoral process began in Ebonyi State in November 2014, there has been an attempt of Ebonyi people conquering itself but God said no. Never in my life have I witnessed the kind of electoral violence witnessed in the recent elections. Never in my life experience that ballot boxes are being snatched and security agencies did nothing to stop it. The results mutilated in private house were sent to INEC and INEC accepted. They are the electoral body; it is not my duty to reject those results but I know that people are injured and brutalized; and if we want to tell ourselves the truth, that is not how elections are run but all a know is that the future is greater than the present.”
The governor urged the people to sheath their swords and sustain peace so that they could have better tomorrow.
Elechi said he started the gospel of power shift in 2010 when he tipped Umahi about his plan to make him his successor if things worked well; but along the line some unavoidable factors made him (Elechi) to renege on the promise.
“I started the gospel of power shift in 2010 and after you served to my own satisfaction as the state PDP chairman, I invited you to be my running mate in 2011 promising to support you to be my successor if things work well; but along the line I told you that I will no longer support you but I cannot support you from contesting.”
