Ahead of the May 29, 2015 Democracy Day celebrations, the Archbishop of Owerri Catholic Archdiocese, Most Rev. Anthony J.V. Obinna has beseeched God to forgive all Nigerians over the overly ills he said that characterized the last general elections across the country.
The Catholic prelate made the solemn prayer in Owerri yesterday while briefing newsmen on the 49th Edition of the World Communications Day.
The Archbishop who described the just concluded elections as an exercise fraught with massive malpractice, killing of innocent people, etc declared that both winners and losers sinned gravely during the exercise.
According to him, every Nigerian needs to pray for forgiveness because of the many vices committed during the elections nationwide stressing that democracy should be made to remain a means of positive communication rather than violence and fraud.
The Archbishop who harped on the message of Pope Francis on this year’s world Communications Day, titled “Communicating the family: A Privileged place of encounter with the gift of love”, the the cleric decried the prevalence of negative communication in families and the country at large.
He condemned the abuse of communication in the media saying that the negative influence of wrong communication was the bane of the larger society.
Obinna advised media practitioners in the country to rise to the occasion and resist the manipulation by ensuring that they avoid terrifying, abusive and corrosive headlines.
“The media can be a hindrance if they become a way to avoid listening to others, to evade physical contact to fill up every moment of silence and rest, so that we forget that silence is an integral element of communication.
He utterly condemned the display and promotion of pornographic materials, crime and other debasing features in the media in other to save the younger generation from corruption inherent in such exhibitions.
He urged the people of the country to use the period of the celebration to forgive and pray for one another so that God will forgive the land of all that transpired in open and secret during the polls.
