Committee of Deans of Engineering and Technology of Nigerian Universities, CODET, has urged the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu to improve science and technology education and training in Nigeria in order to enhance development.
They gave the charge when a delegation of CODET lead by their Chairman, Professor Emmanuel Ajav, paid a courtesy visit to the Minister yesterday in Abuja.
According to Ajav, science and technology, being the backbone of development as demonstrated in all advanced countries, needs to be given special attention to enhanced development.
He explained that government should establish a well equipped technical college in each of the states and FCT, adding that science and technical textbooks should be supplied to subsidised rates in all science-based schools throughout the country.
He further urged that all Engineering personnel involved in Education and Training should be given enhanced allowances to encourage great output, noting that funding at university level should reflect the admission policy of 60 to 40.
“There is need for urgent step and attention to enhance and change science and technology, this is the change era, so we call on this ministry and the federal government to look into this matter,” Ajav said.
He therefore, said that the CODET members are available to assist the ministry in a positive way to ensure the success to this project and also solicit the ministry’s support for the first National Engineering and Technology students’ competition.
Meanwhile, the minister explained that the ministry is making sure that all the agencies under the ministry of science and technology are working together, adding that they have narrowed down all their projects and the way it should be carried out.
“I Invite Chambers and others across the nation and beyond to take advantage of the opportunity and become a partner in the onerous task of enhancing the living standard and well -being of Nigerians being championed by the Buhari led administration.
“Our starting point is to create a good consciousness for all Nigerians to appreciate and to achieve this, we have to be working tirelessly,” Onu said.
He therefore appreciated their contribution towards enhancing science and technology and development of the country.
