THE ongoing crisis between Governor Sullivan Chime and a faction of members of the Enugu State House of Assembly might have broken down irreconcilably as security personnel attached to the embattled Speaker, Hon. Eugene Odo has been withdrawn on the orders of the governor.
This is in spite of the intervention of the governor-elect in the face-off. The governor-elect, Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi had met with both Odo and the faction of nine lawmakers led by Hon. Chinedu Nwamba and both camps agreed to sheath their swords and return to status quo. The status quo was interpreted to mean that the impeachment proceeding initiated against Governor Chime should be stopped while the impeachment of the Speaker by nine out of 24 members of the House should be nullified.
Both camps also agreed not to reconvene the House for two weeks in order to calm frayed nerves.
But apparently not satisfied with the truce brokered by the governor-elect, Governor Chime was said to have sent his security aides after the opposing lawmakers to recover their official vehicles, but it was learnt that this was unsuccessful.
Having succeeded in stopping the governor from withdrawing his official vehicles and those belonging to other principal officers earlier in the week, the Speaker was said to have received a rude shock, when his security aides were withdrawn allegedly on order of the state commissioner of police, Abubakar Adamu Mohammed.
Kicking against the move, which he described as undemocratic, Odo, accused the police commissioner of doing the bidding of the governor.
“Our life is in danger and now in the hands of Sullivan Chime and Police Commissioner in Enugu. On the instruction of the governor, the Police Commissioner has withdrawn the security details attached to me as Speaker of the House of Assembly.
“This is the police that is supposed to protect me as long as the problem in the House is on. They have decided to be unlawful and I want the people of Enugu State to know that this is the situation at the moment and that they should hold Chime or Police Commissioner responsible should anything happen to any of us,” he cried out.
When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu, said he should be given time to enable him ascertain why the speaker’s security aides were withdrawn.
