Enugu State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Monday has distanced itself from a law suit purportedly filed by some members of the party, challenging the decision of the state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to set up caretaker committees in all the 17 local government areas of the state.
Governor Ugwuanyi had announced at the expanded meeting of stakeholders last month that in order to avoid vacuum on 4th January, 2016 that the local government caretaker committees would be constituted.
But in a statement issued by the State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mrs. Kate Ofor, claimed that the party had instituted a legal action against the planned Caretaker Committees in the Councils.
Speaking to reporters in Enugu, the State Chairman of the APC in Enugu State, Dr Ben Nwoye insisted that there was no time the State Working Committee of the party met and decided to challenge the action of the governor in court.
Nwoye expressed dismay that some destabilising agents in the party took a decision without informing him as the chairman of the party and other members of the state working committee of the party.
He stated that though the setting up of Caretaker Committee in local government areas was unconstitutional, he was happy that one of the reasons the governor gave for not conducting the election was that he had embarked on the process of restructuring the local government system in the state.
Nwoye added that he would be happy if the governor would restructure the local government system in the state to enable the votes of people to count, saying he would only support a credible election at the local government level.
He noted that in past, the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) never conducted any credible elections at the local government level, saying that all the candidates of the APC that attempted to challenge the candidates of the PDP in the past were disqualified.
Nwoye used the opportunity to announce that Honourable Hyacinth Chibueze Ngwu has emerged the South East Zonal Publicity Secretary, replacing the self acclaimed spokesman of the party in the South East, Mr Osita Okechukwu.
The APC chairman in the state regretted that some destabilising agents in the party have continued to work hard to destroy the APC in the state, adding he as the chairman of the party was not informed about the purported suit.
