Plans to fish out hidden sports talents in Enugu State will soon kick off. The festival which is designed to develop grassroots sports as well as fish out hidden talents in the localities, is billed to take off October 10, 2016.

The event scheduled to take place between 10th to 21st October 2016, will hold in all the 17 council areas of the state.

Commissioner for sports, Hon. Charles Ndukwe, who briefed Sports Writers at the NnamdiAzikiwe Stadium, Enugu on the fiesta, said the that exercise is aimed at discovering hidden and new talent at the grassroots.

The event, christened “042 sports festival” will be formally kicked off on Monday 10th, October at the main bowl of the NnamdiAzikiwe stadium.

Ndukwe disclosed that the festival would feature several sports and not only football, adding that “we have to take sports beyond football to other sports.”

He hinted that the state is collaborating with other partners such as Annjessy Events Nigeria Limited, a private agency, and the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports to ensure a successful outing.

“It is purely for grassroots’ development of sports, and we have incorporated sports men and women from all the local government areas in the state,’’ he said.

The commissioner assured that the festival would be an annual event, saying that an MOU for four years had been entered into with their sponsors.

In her remarks, UjunwaIkediashi, the Chief Executive Officer of Annjessy Events Nig. Limited, said that the festival would assist the state in discovering and grooming athletes for the future.

According to her, the competition is opened to interested sports men and women resident in the Coal City State, Enugu.

Chairman of Enugu state football Association, (ENSFA) ChidiOffor-Okenwa, who was present at the briefing, stated that the programme had been divided into three centres to accommodate all the senatorial Zones in the state.

He said that the Enugu Zone would compete at NnamdiAzikiwe Stadium from 10th to 13 October while the Agwu zone would take their turn from 15 to 17 October.

The Nsukka Zone according Offo, will take place at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) between 19 to 21st October, 2016.

He disclosed that a total of 12 (twelve) sports, among which is traditional wrestling would contested for during the festival.
