A 62 years estate agent, Sule Akinyemi, was recently arraigned in Lagos for allegedly obtaining N550, 000 belonging to an accommodation seeker.
The accused, Dipo Olubi, who lives at Aguda, Surulere, a Lagos suburb, is facing a two-count-charge of conspiracy and obtaining by false pretences before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State.
Prosecutor, Sergeant Jimah Iseghede, told the court that Akinyemi had on 11 February at about 3 p.m. at his residence obtained N550, 000 from one Mr. Ayodele Ayedun, an accommodation seeker.
Iseghede said that the complainant sought the services of the accused whom a mutual friend of his had formerly introduced to him.
According to him, “The accused showed the complainant the said vacant accommodation at Aguda in Surulere, after which they both agreed upon the rent and the complainant paid on 11February this year.”
He stated that the accused collected the sum of N550, 000 and absconded, leaving the complainant stranded, while another tenant had occupied the apartment.
The Prosecutor submitted that the offences contravened Sections 312 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
It was reported that Section 312 prescribes 15 years’ imprisonment for the offender if found guilty.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The chief magistrate, Mrs. A.O. Adeeyo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum as she adjourned the case till 11May for mention.
