Former Governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili, has slammed a N6bn suit against All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate in the 2015 governorship elections in the state, Dr. AdolDakukuPeterside, for alleged defamation.
Odili, through his counsel, MrKanu Again, SAN, is demanding N6 billion damages against Peterside for defamation, which according to him, arose from a statement credited to defendant when he held a press conference after Governor NyesomWike’s Supreme Court victory thanksgiving in the state.
When the matter came up yesterday, before the State Chief Judge, Justice AdamaIyayi-Lamikanra, the complainant, Dr. Odili entered the witness box and affirmed his witness statement.
Odili stated that what Dakuku said was false and malicious, as Wike never made such inference, but that Dakuku twisted and misrepresented the statement.
However, neither the defendant, Peterside, who is currently the Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), nor any lawyer representing him made appearance.
Agabi, SAN, in his presentation told the court that there was proof of service on Petersidee and that the defendant was duly served.
After listening to the presentation, Justice Iyayi-Lamikanra adjourned the matter to October 27, this year, for further hearing.
Speaking to newsmen shortly after the session, Agabi, SAN stated that the defendant was properly served.
He said: “We sued for libel. And we called our first witness. And we have adjourned for cross examination to 27 October. We felt defamed by their (defendant) publication and we are here to vindicate ourselves.
“You could see that the defendants were not in court, but they have been served, they have been properly served. The court would not have proceeded otherwise.”
