Chief Medical Director, CMD, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam, Anambra State, Dr Lawrence Ikeako, has cautioned Nigerians against excessive exposure to cold and dust during the harmattan season.
Ikeako gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Awka on Tuesday.
The expert said various types of allergies manifest and are transmitted easily during the harmattan.
“The harmattan is here, it is a dusty moment and this time a lot of people will develop allergies. All sorts of respiratory disorders will come up and subsequently, by early next year, cases of diarrhoea will come up and that is what people erroneously refer to as outbreak of cholera.
“It is important that people protect themselves from excessive exposure to cold and dust. In particular, the people who have allergies should protect themselves from cold and dust,’’ he said.
He noted that particular interest should also be given to children.
Besides, the CMD enjoined people to seek medical advice whenever they experience unusual symptoms.
