In commemoration of Global Hand Washing Day, GHD, yesterday in Abuja, experts in the water sector have urged the Federal Government, FG, to build more public hand washing facilities at strategic places like markets and motor parks
Chairman water and sanitation foundation, Health For All, Nigeria, Mr. Gerald Akinjide in an interview with Nigerian Pilot said aside from the federal government, it is incumbent for all in the building construction and facility maintenance industry to provide hand washing facilities especially ones that are clean and well-maintained to encourage thorough hand washing.
Akinjide said the Global Handwashing campaign is aimed at motivating and mobilising millions around the world to wash their hands with soap.
“The campaign is dedicated to raising awareness of handwashing with soap as a key approach to disease prevention.”
While commenting on this year’s theme, “Raise a hand for hygiene”, the Head Hygiene and Sanitation of the foundation, Mrs. Stella said government must put in place hygiene indicators to know where resources should be concentrated.
“In terms of handwashing, this is a reminder that it is possible for governments to count how many people wash their hands and have access to hygiene facilities in homes, schools, and healthcare facilities.”
GHD was created at the annual World Water Week 2008, which was held in Stockholm from August 17 to 23 and initiated by the Global Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing, PPPHW.
This celebration focuses on increasing awareness and understanding of the importance of hand washing with soap while emphasizing how this simple action is an effective and affordable way to counteract diseases and ultimately save lives across the globe.
