Gas explosion in Damaturu, Yobe State has reportedly killed the welder and left three other persons injured, including a soldier.
The incident was said to have occurred after an Army officer approached a welding shop to repair an equipment belonging to the military.
It was learnt that, just when the welder switched on his machine to commence work, the equipment exploded, killing him on the spot.
Though, the exact cause of the explosion is unknown, speculations has it that a gas cylinder being used by the welder may have exploded.
One of those injured was a personnel of the Nigerian Army, who is currently in a critical condition.
Army spokesman in the state, Lt. George Okupe confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, saying, “It was an accidental explosion from a welding tank when a welder was working on a pipe for a soldier. The welder died instantly while the soldier and one other civilian sustained injury and are responding to treatment at the Specialists Hospital, Damaturu.
Lt. Okupe said the situation had been brought under control, but that investigation was ongoing, even as he urged the people not to panic but to go about their normal businesses.
He solicited the support and cooperation of the people, saying “the fight against insurgency is still on and requires collective responsibility.”
Nigerian Pilot gathered that the incident caused panic, making people to scamper for safety, but normalcy has since returned to the town as people go about their normal activities.
