All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State has called on the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, to desist from dragging monarchs in the area into his legal battle over the alleged forgery of Senate Rules.
The APC caucus led by the State Publicity Secretary, Mrs Kate Ofor, Legal Adviser of Enugu West Senatorial Zone and Ezeagu House of Assembly Constituency candidate in the 2015 general election, Anayo Iyama; Chief Chibuike Obu and Robinson Anyanechi made the call in a statement issued after their meeting, yesterday.
The call followed a meeting of traditional rulers in Ezeagu supposedly convened at the instance of Ekweremadu on Saturday where they gave him a totem, Ofo, that nothing would happen to him.
“We are telling the whole world that nothing should happen to Ekweremadu. We have given him another Ofo staff today,” the royal fathers had said.
Piqued by this development, the APC caucus felt that Ekweremadu was taking undue advantage of the traditional rulers and warned him to steer clear and face his legal tango.
“Our understanding of the issue at stake is that some senators, labelled, Unity Forum, felt aggrieved after the June 9, 2015 Senate leadership election and thereafter alleged that the Senate Rules Book was doctored by Senator Ekweremadu and his cohorts. The Unity Forum reported the matter to the police and after investigation, it was filed to court by the attorney-general of the federation. To us it is only the court that can resolve the matter either way.
“We had thought that Senator Ekweremadu as a senior lawyer would devote more attention on how best to assemble the best legal team to quash the matter instead of dragging Ndigbo into his legal tangle. To us Ekweremadu is being sentimental and hysterical over the matter, as if he is not sure-footed, especially when the Senate leadership is jostling for immunity clause at this critical junction. He should be careful before his trajectory crosses the red line of contempt of the court,” the caucus warned.
It expressed displeasure that in spite of the fact that Ekweremadu has not been representing them well, he had the effrontery to take advantage of the royal fathers.
“Our primary concern is that in Ekweremadu’s over ten years in the Senate, all the federal roads in the South-East collapsed. With all his powers the second Niger Bridge remains a mirage, Enugu coal is dormant and our youths remain grossly unemployed. Where was our distinguished senator when all our infrastructure collapsed? Was he not the number two man under former President Goodluck Jonathan when Ndigbo got zero allocation in infrastructure?
“Now that the 2016 budget has provision for the Enugu-Onitsha, Enugu-Port Harcourt highway, second Niger Bridge, Enugu Coal etc, is it not better for us to collectively push for the execution of these projects instead of abusing President Muhammadu Buhari? Tomorrow the Igwes will complain of marginalisation after unwanted abuses.
“The South-South today is talking of Calabar-Lagos rail line, East-West Road and we are at Ezeagu celebrating a man whom while our infrastructure is decaying, was becoming richer. He is not interested in agitating for the completion of federal roads, especially Udi and Ezeagu federal roads initiated by Ogbuefi Ozomgbachi in the seventh National Assembly. We have to change the narrative from that of personality cult to infrastructural development,” the APC caucus pointed out.
