Defending champions, Akwa United FC of Uyo are safely through to the quarter-finals of this year’s Federation Cup competition after beating Sunshine Stars of Akure 8-7 in sudden death.
In front of a scanty crowd at the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi, both teams cancelled each other out during regulation time.
Akwa United went close to scoring early in the game through Ubong Friday who spunned his chances. But they soon to lose their first choice goalkeeper, Femi Kayode who sustained foot injury and was replaced by Bassey Akpan.
In the ensuing penalties that followed, scores tight at 5-5, thus needing a sudden death shoot-out to decide the game. And once Sunshine lost the initiative, Otobong Friday became the unlikely hero by scoring his kick to send the darling club of Uyo fans to the last eight.
