Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, FERMA, has commenced rehabilitation of fallen sections of the Afikpo/Okigwe highway to reduce road carnages.
The reconstruction began Wednesday at the boundary between Ebonyi and Abia States in Ivo Local Government Area.
The South-East coordinator of the agency, Engr. Adedayo Adebayo said the reconstruction exercise was ongoing nationwide and aimed at maintaining the highways to make them safer for use.
The reconstruction is being done through direct labour which is not limited to patching the roads but also total overhaul of the areas badly affected, according to Engr. Adebayo.
On her part, the state chief engineer of the FERMA, Engr. Ebere Ogbuagu said the road is a busy one and that heavy duty vehicles always convey different goods, including stone chippings through the road.
She said this was why the agency embarked on rehabilitating the collapsed sections of the road to ensure there are no potholes to avert road accident.
Nigerian Pilot reports that about 50killometres of the road has been rehabilitated and the exercise is expected to end in Afikpo, Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
