A 32 million cubic-capacity dam has been handed over to the Osun State Government by the Federal Ministry of Water to boost the provision of portable water in the state.
Director of Dams and Reservoir Operation in the ministry, Mr. Reginald Ikpeawujo, who was represented by Mr. John Ochigbo, the Deputy Director/Project Manager led the federal government team during the Handling Over ceremony at Kajola community.
Ochigbo described the project as a contribution of the federal government towards the provision of portable water to the people of the state, especially Ilesa and its environs.
According to him, “the project started in 2006, and it was delayed as a result of paucity of funds, we came back to site in 2012, and completed it in 2014, it is 32 million-cubic-capacity.
“It cost the federal government to the tune of N3.3 billion, to complete the pump and power house.
“The second phase, which is the downstream will be for treatment plant and transmission, which will be taken over by the state government.
“There was a year liability period to ascertain the condition of the pump and power house to ensure that they are in good condition.
“The project is strictly for water supply, knowing fully well that it is the responsibility of the state and federal government to provide water for the people.
“The power house and the pump are in good condition, and we are handing over to the state government to take over the day to day activities of the dam as from today,” he said.
Responding, the Consultant to the Osun State government on Water Resources, Engr (Mrs) Tawa Williams, said the Osun state government was very grateful to the federal government for the gesture.
She added that there was still a lot of work to be done on the second phase, promising that the people of Ilesa and Kajola communities would start benefitting from the scheme in the next two years.
Williams however, commended the Kajola community, which is the host community for their cooperation and hospitality when the project lasted.
She implored them to protect the project jealously and utilise it effectively for the benefit of all.
Earlier in his welcome speech, the General Manager, Osun State Water Corporation, Engr. Gbenga Owojuyigbe highly praised the donor of the water scheme, saying the gesture would go a long way in averting epidemic diseases in the affected areas.
Owojuyigbe however reiterated efforts of the state government in providing adequate water supply to the entire people of the state all the times.
Speaking on behalf of Reynolds Construction Company (Nig) Ltd that handled the project, the Chief Engineer, Engr. Edan Koren, said the community cooperated with them when the work was going on site while enjoying them to continue using the water judiciously.
