Federal Government says it would hold Controllers of works posted to 36 states of the federation responsible for poor quality jobs of road projects.
The Minister of Works, Housing and Power, Barr. Babatunde Fashola revealed this at 22nd council of works meeting in Katsina State.
Barr. Fashola said controllers of work must ensure that execution of road projects abide by contract specifications.
The minister explained that controllers of works as ambassadors of the ministry of works should liaise with state governors, local communities and contractors for smooth discharge of their responsibilities.
He said roads that help access important economic places like sea ports, mining areas, petrol evacuation, as well as roads that allow for heavy traffic would be given priority by the council.
He said henceforth, contractors handling road projects would not be paid their monies till they are certified to have insurance cover for their workers.
He said the ministry would soon commence intervention on road projects across the state with a view to making major roads motor-able.
The minister said states that used their resources to rehabilitate federal roads would soon be paid their monies.
On his part, Governor Aminu Bello Masari, called on the ministry and stakeholders to address problem of overloading in nation’s highways.
