Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita, has called on stakeholders in the science sector to imbibe the goal-getting mindset that will speed up and elevate the technological development of the nation in tandem with the vast potentials available in the science, technology and innovation sector.
She said this during the send-off party organised by the Ministry in honour of its retired director, Alhaji Musa Shaba in Abuja.
Mrs. Oyo-Ita described the retired director as a goal-getter whose expertise and depth of knowledge brought about some technical expansions in the ministry. During his tenure, she noted that the Ministry grew from three technical departments to seven which created opportunity for elevation of the scientific officers and also widened the scope of research work.
Over the years, various efforts had been put in place by various administrations to the development of science and technology, as a result of fact that Nigeria has continually being a dumping ground for technological products from other developed countries.
The technological products imported into the country, are even substandard ones. It is in view of this that, the present administration is trying to break away from the norm, by putting in place all the necessary machineries, as well as partners with other stake holders to ensure Nigeria is on the right footage of becoming a technologically advanced country.
The significance of science and technology in any society cannot be over-emphasised, this is because, the development of science and technology will definitely facilitate the development of other sectors of the economy.
This has been the reasons why the developed economies today, have a clear edge above other less developed countries. Science and technology is the key to any meaningful development of any society, therefore, its relevance cannot be downplayed.
She further urged, serving civil servants to emulate the former director who as a good crisis-manager and through his interventions helped to maintain a sustainable industrial harmony between the management and the staff.
“I found him a worthy team player and somebody who always go the extra mile to achieve set objectives”, she added.
In his remark, the retired director said he has always seen each opportunity as a platform for service to fellow human beings and to that extent gives all the glory to God and the unflinching support received from the permanent secretary.
