This write-up is not about the famous film, The Fighting Temptations, a 2003 American musical comedy-drama film directed by Jonathan Lynn, written by Elizabeth Hunter and Saladin K. Patterson, and distributed by Paramount Pictures and MTV Films.
Also, this write-up does not have the same plot in the said film which revolves around Darrin Hill (Cuba Gooding Jr.) who travels to his hometown of Monte Carlo, Georgia as he attempts to revive a church choir in order to enter a gospel competition with the help of a beautiful lounge singer, Lilly (Beyoncé Knowles), with whom he falls in love with. Darrin and Lilly must work together to bring the church community together, while developing a romantic relationship.
The film, which received mixed reviews upon release, is notable for its soundtrack and ensemble cast.
What it really is
In a moment like this when every appearance of democratic governance is becoming some kind of mirage in the eyes and sensibilities of the people, temptation must abound among the same people and in their hearts.
From about temptation to disbelief and doubt every pronouncement from the seat of the federal government to the reality of hunger, insecurity and hopelessness in the land, not a few are losing faith that our collective tomorrow would be better than yesterday. Little wonder that these days all kinds of incredible stories hit the newsrooms.
About two weeks back, the story of a man impregnating a mother and her daughter made headlines. But even at that, it was a tip of the ice berg compared to the rising cases of drunk-driving, rape, abandonment of families by their bread winners and quick temperament among the people. There are also rampant cases of thievery, thuggery and breakups in marriages due to infidelity, impatience and related pressures that the current dispensation is increasingly imposing on the people.
On the other side of the table is the increasing temptation by many to seek various ingenious ways to counter the pressures listed above. And that implies some boom in the membership of religious houses as well as other spiritual homes. But then, that throws up the question of whether they get the needed solutions from such houses. On this, my answer is an emphatic NO.
When a man vacillates from his current position to many other positions for want of “solutions” he has no control over, he becomes a wanderer who would with time return to where he started his journey from with nothing positive to show for the rudderless and somewhat amoebic movement he undertook.
Little wonder why it is common to get suspects in police custody readily tell you that “temptation” or better still, “the devil” caused them to commit the crime for which they are nabbed. Ask them to define what they mean, they will tell you about the economic hardship in the land that has rendered them jobless; that had made their wives to pack out of their homes; that caused them to become the ridicule of the community, and many more.
But to such people, I must admonish them that according to what the Holy Bible states in 1Corinthian 10.13, they are bigger than such “temptations.” Let them by faith uphold their trust in the leadership of the country and the coming greatness of the Nigerian state. Let them know and hold the fact that for every appearance of a twist and turn in life’s journey to gloryland, the solution they seek is near.
Afterall, there isn’t any temptation that you have experienced which is unusual for humans. God, who faithfully keeps his promises, will not allow you to be tempted beyond your power to resist. But when you are tempted, He will also give you the ability to endure the temptation as your way of escape.
Note too that not everyone is tempted in the same way. What is a struggle for one person may not be the least bit tempting to another person. For example one person may be tempted with smoking. For the next guy, smoking has never had a foothold on the person and therefore is not at all tempting.
James 1:14 says that we are drawn away with our own lusts. This indicates that each person has their own week areas to deal with. You need to understand your own weakness so that you will know how to combat and avoid it.
Fighting temptation may not be as easy as I have tried to present it here. But in whatever situation or circumstance you find yourself, never allow your faith in you, your country and family fail. No degree of temptation must cause you to cave in to commit rape, betrayal, mischief, felony, unbelief, marital indiscretion, among others. Have a daily relationship with God; pray always. Catch the right attitude and bring down that bug of temptation that is waiting to eat you up.
