A 22 storey-building named Mammam Kotangora House, situated on Marina Street, Lagos Island, Lagos, was yesterday morning gutted by fire.
The building which housed the Federal Mortgage Bank, Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation, NDIC, Wema banks and other business outfits was reported to have been engulfed by fire which affected the second floor before spreading to the other floors of the building.
It was gathered that the inferno which started around 9 am, from a generating set on the third floor of the complex and spread to the fourth to seventh floors of the building where the banking hall is located. And as at 12.30 pm, the fire had extended to the eighth floor.
A law firm belonging to two Senior Advocates of Nigeria, SAN, Chief Felix Fagbohungbe and Professor Gabriel Olawoyin, and an office complex of National Deposit Insurance Corporation, NDIC, in the complex were also affected.
An employee of the bank, who identified himself as Muyiwa, who spoke to our correspondent said no casualty had been recorded.
Fire fighters made frantic efforts to put Fire at Mamman Kontagora house as it got worse and spread to the 7 floor.
It was gathered that the fire was put out at the 3rd floor but as the fire services from UBA, Julius Berger, Lagos State fire service and others were about withdrawing, another fire was noticed on the 7th floor was put under control, as there was no casualty from the incident as the staff were evacuated from the building.
However combined team of fire fighters from the 3 division of Lagos fire service, UBA and Julius Berger succeeded in putting it off.
Meanwhile two adjacent buildings, Eko Electricity Distribution Company on the left and a military formation on the right of the building were being cautiously guided to prevent the fire from affecting them.
Mamman Kotangora House spread across two most longest and popular street on Lagos island Marina and Broad streets.
