Fire on Wednesday night gutted Abakpa main market in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state and destroyed goods and property worth millions of naira.
Eyewitnesses told our Correspondent that the fire which started about eight O’ Clock was however put out through the combined efforts of fire -fighters and some sympathizers including the Deputy Governor of the state, Dr. Kelechi Igwe.
The fire outbreak, which raged for over four hours affected about five buildings and destroyed most of the shops along Gunning road and Ojiowere street.
The fire was said to have emanated from a spark at a milling section in the market and would have destroyed both flanks of the Gunning and Ojiowere lines if not for the quick intervention of men of the state fire service.
The Chairman, State Emergency Management Agency, Reverend Ephraim Ononye and the Chairman Ebonyi Local Government Area, Mr. Anselem Enigwe who also witnessed the incident commended relevant agencies for their promptness in responding to the distress calls made to them.
The Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mrs. Elizabeth Ogbaga expressed sadness over the development and assured the victims that the state government would not abandon them.
The Deputy Governor of the State, Dr. Igwe described the fire outbreak as unfortunate noting that the relocation of the traders to the newly constructed International market had reached advanced stage.
Security agents led by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP George Okafor were also on ground to prevent miscreants from looting goods and property.
